In Last of the Red Hot Lovers, Broadway’s master of comedy, Neil Simon (The Odd Couple, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Broadway Bound, etc.), has created a laugh-out-loud play that is smart, witty, poignant and a feast for four talented actors to bring to life. Middle class, middle-aged and feeling that life has passed him by, long-married restauranteur Barney Cashman has decided to join the late 1960’s sexual revolution and embark on a clandestine affair. During the course of the show, his naïve expectations are up-ended in each of the encounters he arranges with the three memorable women he thinks will offer the emotional and physical nirvana he dreams about.
April 9 - May 2, 2027
Performances Fri./Sat. at 8 p.m.; Sun. at 2 p.m.
Special Performance Thursday, June 19 at 8 p.m.
Rehearsals will begin shortly after February 19 and will generally be held 3-4 times per week (this may include weeknights and Sunday evenings and Saturday mornings or afternoons).
ALL ROLES ARE OPEN Vagabond Players is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We encourage actors of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexualities, abilities, and ages to audition. We are a nonprofit, non-union theatre. Actors will receive a $100 stipend.
All four roles in the show can be defined as “leading” roles, and therefore require experienced actors with strong comic skills and timing.
Barney Cashman (male presenting / 40’s – 50’s) a romantically and sexually frustrated “Everyman” from the burbs who has finally decided to act upon a long festering desire to have an encounter with a woman other than his wife. He is a lovely person: sweet, caring, considerate and scared to death that anyone, particularly his wife, will find out what he is doing.
Elaine Navazio (female presenting / mid 30’s – 40’s) a smart, sardonic, perceptive and articulate New Yorker (not Manhattan, but maybe Brooklyn or Queens). No college, but intelligent, somewhat cynical and unhappily married. Her assignation with Barney is not the first time she has looked for sexual satisfaction outside of her marriage.
Bobbi Michele (female presenting / 20’s – early 30’s) attractive, bubbly, self-obsessed and self-deluded. Bobbi is a would-be Broadway dancer/actress who is forever going to auditions and forever finding more and more suspect stumbling blocks as to why her career has gone nowhere (it may have to do with the fact that she has no talent).
Jeanette Fisher (female presenting / 40’s – early 50’s) a middle-aged suburban matron who has learned that her own husband has been cheating on her with her best friend. She fails to see any meaning in life or goodness in anyone or anything, and following the upcoming year in therapy with her shrink, plans to drive off the Verrazano Bridge. She is very depressed. Very, very depressed.
